Frequently Asked Questions
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) are national qualifications that formally recognise the skills and experience staff bring to the workplace. They provide organisations with evidence that staff are working to best practices, aligned with National Occupational Standards. SVQs assess competence rather than serve as a training course, though they may highlight areas where additional training or development could be beneficial.
All staff working in the Social Services and Healthcare sector are required to complete an SVQ as part of their registration requirements. SVQs in areas such as Management, Business & Administration are also available for professionals in other industries as part of their Continuous Professional Development (CDP).
Completing SVQs provides staff with a nationally recognized qualification that demonstrates adherence to national standards in their work. Completing an SVQ can boost confidence, enhance job performance, and offer fresh insights into their role. Additionally, SVQs serve as valuable development tools, providing solid evidence for appraisals and equipping staff with essential competencies for future service delivery and career progression.
No, staff are not required to take exams. Instead, they are assessed in the workplace through various methods, such as observation, reflection, professional discussions, reviewing current work products, and questioning to support their knowledge and understanding. Staff are evaluated on the skills they use daily in their roles.
The time needed to complete an SVQ is flexible, as everyone progresses at their own pace. However, candidates are generally expected to finish within 9 to 12 months, depending on the specific award and level of qualification being pursued.
Staff have access to support from both an assessor and an internal verifier. The SVQ Team is also available to provide information, advice, or guidance related to SVQs. In coordination with managers, staff will receive support in allocating time for SVQ assignments and assessments. Additionally, underpinning knowledge and understanding are essential to any qualification, and relevant education staff will be available to support candidates as needed.
If you’re a manager, please contact us to discuss which SVQs may be suitable for your staff, including any funding considerations. In some cases, a service-level agreement may also need to be established. If you’re a prospective candidate, reach out to us for an application form and to explore which SVQs align with your goals. If the SVQ is not already listed in your CPD, please consult with your manager, as their support is essential before applying. Funding and other details specific to your chosen award will be discussed during the application process.
